Although the number of hijacked vessels and seafarers has decreased since 2012 the risk still exists and shall be taken into account by the employers of seafarers. To meet its requirements the employer of seafarers shall organize security trainings and should subscribe appropriate kidnap & ransom insurance.
The IMO International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) introduced in 2012 new requirements about security training, as well as provisions to ensure that seafarers are properly trained to cope if their ship comes under attack by pirates.
The Seafarers Proficiency in Security Awareness (SPSA) is now required for all seafarers. This training is for personnel employed or engaged on board ships to which the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) applies.
